King County Water Taxi by Wheelchair: From Dock to Destination

Check the sailing for your exact travel date, arrange any boarding assistance, and plan the connection beyond the dock. Confirm the return before leaving: the West Seattle and Vashon routes have different seasonal schedules.

A boat ride can turn the journey itself into part of the outing. For a wheelchair user heading across Elliott Bay or between Seattle and Vashon, the useful question is how the dock connects to everything else: boarding help, the next bus, and a way home before service ends.

Plan the sailing, boarding assistance, and onward connection together. King County’s Water Taxi is a passenger service, so a wheelchair-accessible van taking you to the terminal needs a separate pickup arrangement if you will use one after the crossing. For travel with a vehicle aboard, consult our Washington State Ferries connection guide.

Ask for boarding assistance before the boat leaves

King County’s accessibility guidance identifies the Water Taxi’s docks, waiting areas, and boats as accessible to passengers with disabilities and mobility devices. Ask a crew member for boarding help. At Pier 50, you can also use the ADA assistance call button in the waiting area.

Explain the assistance you want and any concern about your particular chair or equipment. For questions before travel, the Water Taxi lists 206-477-3979, with office hours Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Discuss support beyond boarding separately, including personal assistance from a companion.

The same rider information says reservations are not accepted. Buying a ticket or pass in advance does not guarantee a place on a particular sailing. Leave room in the itinerary for waiting rather than treating a purchased fare as a confirmed departure.

Give your ride provider the correct dock

Use the terminal name and street address in the transportation request:

  • Downtown Seattle: Pier 50, 801 Alaskan Way, with entry at the bottom of Yesler Way.
  • West Seattle: Seacrest Dock in Seacrest Park, 1660 Harbor Avenue SW.
  • Vashon: Vashon Ferry Terminal, 10800 North Vashon Highway.

These locations appear on the official West Seattle and Vashon route pages. Ask a ground-transport provider to confirm a lawful, usable loading point and the path from there to the passenger entrance. A dock address does not identify where a van can deploy its ramp.

If meeting someone after arrival, agree on a recognizable place beyond the boarding flow. Give them the route and direction of travel so they do not wait at another ferry entrance.

Use the winter schedule for a winter trip

The Water Taxi’s Captain’s Blog explains the October 10, 2026 seasonal change. West Seattle continues weekday and weekend service, but its late Friday and Saturday sailings ended. Vashon returned to Monday-through-Friday service after its weekend pilot.

As checked November 7, the route pages identify the current schedule period as October 10, 2026 through April 9, 2027. Select your actual travel date and check both directions, including holiday changes and service alerts. A summer screenshot can leave you planning around a boat that no longer runs.

Choose a target return with enough margin to reach the terminal and board. For a time-sensitive appointment, compare the entire itinerary with a direct ground ride before committing to a tight connection.

Connect Seacrest to Alki or the Junction

The West Seattle route page lists Route 773 between Seacrest and Alaska Junction, and Route 775 serving Seacrest, Alki, and Admiral Junction. The Water Taxi’s seasonal update confirms that these shuttles are free. King County describes the connecting shuttles as accessible.

Check the shuttle’s current timetable and the stop nearest your destination. Review the path from that stop to the entrance, including hills and curb ramps; our AccessMap planning guide can help.

For Vashon, the route page lists Metro Routes 118 and 119 as island connections. Match the actual bus trip to the sailing and destination. If using a private wheelchair ride instead, obtain that provider’s confirmation before departing Seattle.

Check the fare and keep the return plan reachable

Reduced fares require the appropriate eligibility credential. The current route tables list a one-way fare for Regional Reduced Fare Permit holders of $2.50 on West Seattle and $3 on Vashon. Recheck the West Seattle fares or Vashon fares before travel. Our RRFP and ORCA guide explains the permit process.

Save the return sailing, connecting ride details, and a contact for changes where you can retrieve them easily. If a sailing changes, tell the receiving driver or companion before they set out.

Before leaving home: confirm the correct dock, boarding help, fare method, onward connection, and a workable return. Those five details let you spend more of the crossing enjoying the view.
